Have you ever met the problems of battery capacity decrease ?
In the market, there are a part of batteries after using over 1 year ,
The voltage of battery rising fast while charging, but drop rapidly while discharging, its most likely that the lead plates inside battery occured Irreversible lead sulfation.
A layer of white and thick crystallized Lead sulfate is produced on the battery plate, which is in poor conduction.
When charging normally, those lead sulfate can’t completely turn into lead and lead dioxide. This phenomenon is called "lead sulfate hardening", referred to as "Sulfidation".
Its very difficult to eliminate the crystallization while charing normally, the defree of sulfidation have great relations to the VRLA battery capacity, the more severe of sulfidation happen, the less battery
capacity will be, until battery dies.
Lead sulfation is the common fault for VRLA batteries, many batteries lose efficiency because of it.
The reasons result in the Irreversible lead sulfation are as follows:
(1) Long-term storage / Batteries sit excessively long
As there is sulfuric acid on the surface of the active material for battery plate, the ionization effect will disappear with the aging of the lead sulfate on the surface of the active material.
(2) Frequent deep discharge and over discharge/ excessive or insufficient discharge current/ not to charge in time or under charge.
(3) Performance inconsistency of each battery in the battery bank, e.g. the existence of the backward battery which with excessive difference.
If the capacity of certain battery is significantly lower than that of the others, followed by voltage reduction of the overall battery pack, the backward battery will be first filled while the others is still being
under charge, causing over charge. Or, the backward battery will be first discharged, causing over discharge.
The result is that the gradual aggravation of sulfuric acid salination makes the degree of backwardness more serious, and later creater a vicious circle.
If above reason can not be adjusted long time, a kind of thick lead sulfate will born on the battery lead plates, the lead sulfate is hard to dissolve and own bad electrical conductivity, it will block the micro hole on the lead plates and hinder the electrolyte’s permeation,
so the active materials inside lead plates fail to join the chemical reaction, lead to the result of battery capacity decrease and internal resistance increase.
Finally it will create insoluble crystal on battery lead plates, the electrical conductivity of electrode decreased obviously and lead plates inside active materials dropped continuously, fail to join electrical chemical reaction.
